‘Tis the season to book a caterer for your holiday party, so choose a company with over 30 years of experience in planning, preparing and executing all types of holiday events.

Together, Michelle Talarico and Kathy Dreiling, owners of Picnic Basket Catering Company, explained why hiring a full-service caterer is the best decision to guarantee your holiday party or event’s success.

Picnic Basket Catering can provide festive decorations for holiday parties.

How many parties have you catered in your more than 30 years of experience?

We’ve catered over 30,000 parties. We always come prepared for any situation that arises.

What is the furthest you’ve traveled for a holiday party?

Westcliffe, Denver, Cañon City, Castle Rock, Trinidad and Kanorado, Kansas. A full-service catering company is prepared to travel hundreds of miles and still serve top-quality food.

What’s the largest holiday party you’ve catered?

We had an event at Charis Bible College with 2500 guests, but we’ve done larger events such as the Penrose Hospital opening for 4000 guests. We approach every party differently because we cater events that range from 20 people to more than 2000. We have a system in place with our executive chef — Lewis Guarasci — who ensures our standard of serving high-quality food and providing great service is met, for any size event.

What’s the craziest moment in holiday catering that you’ve experienced over the years?

Hmmm, well…The antlers accidentally broke off of a large reindeer ice carving while setting up an event at a private home. The chef got creative and used aspen branches to replace them. It actually turned out beautifully and the client was impressed by how quickly the chef adapted. Food folly’s 101… pans of mashed potatoes falling out of a moving van and “wearing” turkey gravy throughout the event.

How have you gone above and beyond for a holiday event?

We go above and beyond for every party we cater. No matter the weather or the circumstances — we make it happen. We load trucks in thigh-deep snow, calling the kitchen to magically produce more food for a party that underestimated by 100+ guests. We’ve encountered deer guarding the front door of a house where we were catering and had to navigate carefully. We’ve even stayed the night at a haunted hotel for an event in Westcliffe over a busy night during the Holiday season. The best, the worst and the funniest stories come out of those first three weeks of December.

What are some of your favorite venues to cater holiday parties?

We are the preferred catering company at several area venues because of our longevity and cherished relationships in the community. We often cater at Spruce Mountain Ranch, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, Flying Horse Ranch, The Air Force Academy and of course countless offices, homes and venues around the Pikes Peak Region.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone planning a holiday party?

Hire a caterer! We will not only make sure the food is great at your party but can also help take care of everything else, including setup, bartending, cleanup and more! Our staff will be there to ensure your event’s success.

Do you provide any festive decor for holiday parties?

Yes! We have a variety of decorations, including beautiful linens, greenery, table scapes and more to add a special touch to your party or event.

Do you offer holiday cocktails for adult parties?

Absolutely. We have bartenders that are professionally trained, but we also recommend using our partner Peak Beverage for your bar services as well as some boutique bartending services for tastings and specialty cocktail menus. They are fantastic.

Do you cater to people’s homes for the holidays?

Yes. Our staff will treat your home like it is their own and you can just sit back and entertain your guests. Leave the cooking, setup and cleanup to us!

Is it true that your staff occasionally sings Christmas carols at the holiday parties?

This is true, and we have staffers that are talented who have also been asked to play piano at parties, when asked. We pride ourselves on having really professional, talented and fun staff!

Anything else about the perks of hiring a full-service catering company?

From helping park cars to ironing clothes and taking coats, we do whatever it takes to help make sure your event is enjoyable!
