Stage 4 of the 2014 USA Pro Challenge seemed to have an outright positive effect on few vendors along the Aug. 21 race route, but small business folks stand strongly in support of the event that brings international attention to the Pikes Peak region. The Colorado Springs leg exposed scores of local businesses to Pro […]

Until the early 20th century, Colorado Springs residents enjoyed virtually unfettered access to the forests, fields and lakes of the city’s mountain backdrop. In the early 1870s a trail led up Cheyenne Canyon, through Jones Park, to Seven Lakes and on to the summit of Pikes Peak. Cabins and homesteads dotted the slopes, and one […]

Throughout the expansive room inside Library 21c, interested people gathered in clusters, listening to others, asking questions and receiving answers. The crowd estimated at 250 to 300 might not have been fully united, but on this Tuesday evening, even the known cynics kept their confrontational instincts in check. The event was billed as a “different” […]

As you already might have seen in this issue, Business Journal columnist John Hazlehurst takes the Colorado Springs city government to task for its treatment of nonprofit events seeking Lodgers and Automobile Renters Tax funding. As a direct result of City Council forcing event organizers to provide justification proving economic impact, and making that a […]

The news that the Colorado Balloon Classic will leave Colorado Springs in 2015 for greener (or maybe less bureaucratic) pastures was dismaying, to say the least. A press release from the Classic’s organizers cited “politics within the city, increasingly rigid special event procedures and an onerous 2015 LART [city sponsorship] application” as driving the decision. […]

After a 2013 hiatus, the state’s largest spectator event once again is making its way through Colorado Springs next week — but don’t blink. Look around you, not always in the most obvious places, and you’ll see some very positive signs of a developing trend in the Pikes Peak region. For starters, check the downtown alley going north and south between Cascade Avenue and Tejon Street. Already, one block of alleyway has been spruced up and resurfaced between Bijou […]

Another August, another Copper Triangle, and another couple of weeks of being broke. We left Colorado Springs last Friday afternoon for Copper Mountain, stayed in a pleasant studio at Copper Mountain Resort on Friday and Saturday nights, and came back Sunday afternoon. The bike ride was wonderful, as always. What’s not to like about an […]

Most shop owners, whatever their ilk, would probably be upset if someone selling the same stuff moved in a block away. Fortunately for Bicycle Experience’s Todd Hood and Bubba “Blaze” Hayes, they’re only in competition with themselves. “Now we have a boutique,” said Hood, from the newest Bicycle Experience shop at the Ivywild School. That […]

As stolid and unimaginative as our little city sometimes seems, it has had its share of dreamers and schemers, folks who weren’t afraid to reach for the brass ring. Some of their dreams came true — but many others didn’t. Colorado Springs didn’t host the Winter Olympics in 1956 or 1960. No railroad tunnel was […]

Michele Hefner has spent half her life working at the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings. Now the general manager, Hefner, 39, ruminated recently with the Business Journal about her 20 years working at the popular tourist attraction west of Colorado Springs. How did you arrive at becoming manager of the attraction? Going to college, I got […]

Week after week, we hear assurances that important announcements are coming, perhaps soon, in regard to City for Champions. Just a guess, but that probably would not include anything newsworthy in regard to the proposed multipurpose Colorado Sports and Event Center, commonly known as the downtown stadium. In truth, it’s an indoor-outdoor complex adjacent to […]
