Parking prices are up in downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City after the city’s first parking rate change in 14 years took effect Wednesday.

The change also extended hours of operation for downtown parking meters, which will now run from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-10 p.m. Sunday, according to a Thursday news release from the city.

Meters closest to the city center will charge $1.25 per hour, according to the release. This area is bordered by Boulder Street to the north, Nevada Avenue to the east, Vermijo Street to the south, and Cascade Avenue to the west.

Meters farther out —  bordered by East St. Vrain Street to the north, Wahsatch Avenue to the east, East Las Animas Street to the south, and South Sierra Madre Street to the west — are $1 per hour, and meters on the periphery are 75 cents per hour.

According to the city, longer hours of operation will reduce the number of employees, residents and hotel guests using on-street parking for extended periods of time, creating turnover every few hours for patrons of shops and restaurants.

“Downtown is rapidly evolving, with hundreds of new residents and hotel patrons, and a thriving culinary scene,” Susan Edmondson, Downtown Partnership president and CEO, said in the release. “Extending meter times into the evening creates churn, meaning multiple patrons have opportunity for on-street parking instead of those close-in spots being dominated by nighttime employees or overnight hotel patrons.”
