The city of Colorado Springs is readying a range of transportation improvement projects in the S. Nevada Avenue and Ivywild areas, and will hold an information meeting Monday, June 24 to outline the construction schedule.

Mixed-use commercial and residential redevelopment is ongoing as part of South Nevada Urban Renewal Area and the city is coordinating construction phasing of the upcoming transportation projects to minimize impact to the community and commuters.

However, according to the city’s website, to take advantage of the construction season there will be “some overlap in timing of construction.”

Scheduled construction is weather-dependent, and includes the following projects.

The South Nevada Avenue Improvements Project (June through end of July 2019) will rebuild the center median on Nevada Ave. between Navajo St. and Ramona Ave. to create left-turn lanes to Navajo St. and the shopping center on the west side of Nevada Ave. When complete, this segment of Nevada Avenue will include a traffic signal mid-block between Navajo Street and Ramona Avenue. During construction, the inside lanes of Nevada Ave. will be closed in both directions, which could cause traffic congestion and delays. Motorists are strongly advised to take alternate routes when possible. No sidewalks or business accesses will be closed during construction.

The South Tejon Roundabout Project (July 2019 through early 2020) will reconstruct the intersection of S. Tejon St., Cascade Ave., Ramona Ave., and Cheyenne Boulevard, which currently includes five approaches to a single point. To improve safety, capacity and traffic flow, the intersection will be rebuilt as a modern roundabout. It is expected to improve operations, reduce travel delay, reduce long-term maintenance costs with the removal of the traffic signal, and carry cyclists and pedestrians fully through all legs of the intersection. It will also improve traffic operations, according to the city, “and enhance the sense of community in compliance with the Ivywild Neighborhood Master Plan and the historic character of the neighborhood.”

The Cascade Avenue over Cheyenne Run Bridge Replacement Project will start in late fall 2019 and should be complete in summer 2020. According to the city, the Cascade Avenue Bridge (built in 1925) “has exceeded its design life and is functionally obsolete.” Although not structurally deficient, the city’s web site states the roadway and bridge “are not wide enough to accommodate the types of vehicles and traffic it’s expected to carry with today’s criteria.” The bridge will be replaced with a similar concrete arch structure wide enough to accommodate current needs and provide a Cheyenne Creek crossing for the next 100 years.

The 2C Overlay Projects (early 2020 to fall 2020) will see replacement pre-overlay concrete/asphalt overlay work in two locations:
• S. Tejon St. (from S. Cascade Ave. to Motor Way)
• S. Cascade Ave. (from Cheyenne Boulevard at the new roundabout to Brookside St.)

The South Nevada & Ivywild Transportation Improvements Information Meeting will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, June 24 at the Ivywild School Gymnasium, 1604 S. Cascade Ave.
