Local economy to benefit from upcoming Netflix production

Colorado Springs businesses could reel in big dollars once filming for the upcoming Netflix movie, “Our Souls at Night,” begins in the area next month.

Production will start around September 12 in Colorado Springs, Denver and Florence, Colo., with Colorado Springs being its home base and its cast [to include Robert Redford and Jane Fonda] and crew use local hotels, office space, cars and homes for the project.

“The total economic impact could be in the millions after the cast and crew film are here for four to six weeks, buying local food and anything else they need during that time,” said Amy Long, film liaison for the Colorado Springs Film Commission. “The impact could be in the thousands each day.”

Long said the film commission has been working with the crew for about a month, helping secure hotels, catering, office space and the use of historical homes in Colorado Springs for the film.

“This city is a good place to shoot a film because it’s an attractive area and at the state level, we can help defer some costs for the movie,” Long said. “Our focus is to make the crew’s experience as hassle-free as possible and get them the resources and information they need.”

Locals interested in being an extra in the film are invited to attend an open casting call from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. August 27 at the Hillside Community Center, 925 South Institute St. The event is free and open to men and women of all ethnicities, ages 12 and older. “The crew is also interested in using locals’ vehicles, so bring a photo of your car to the casting call,” Long said. “People in general are excited to be a part of the movie, with well-known actors in town–that doesn’t happen every day. It’s a fun thing to be a part of.”

The movie is based on the book “Our Souls at Night,” written by Colorado native Kent and based in Colorado. The last movie filmed in the area was “Cop Car” starring Kevin Bacon that was released in 2015.

Long said the Netflix production should have more of an economic impact since it includes a bigger budget and two A-list actors.

“Once the movie comes out, they’ll be promoting it, we’ll be promoting it and it will be a good opportunity to get the word out as Colorado Springs being a great place to visit.”
