Following Walmart’s 2013 commitment to hire U.S. veterans, the organization announced May 25 they have employed 3,278 veterans in Colorado and 130,828 nationwide.
Three years ago on Memorial Day, the multinational retail corporation announced its Welcome Home Commitment, guaranteeing job offers to honorably discharged veterans within 12 months of active duty. The organization set a goal of employing 100,000 veterans by the end of 2018 and since has changed its projection, aiming to hire 250,000 honorably discharged veterans.
“We think it is very important to bridge a gap for those facing their transition into civilian life,” said Anne Hatfield, director of communications for Walmart. “Walmart can provide employment while a veteran is pursuing education opportunities to reach their next goals, or we may be part of a long-term career plan for a service member who wants to apply their skills to retail operations.”
In Colorado Springs, about 1,000 service members transition out of the military every month to join the civilian community; the city’s military presence contributes to 40 percent of the region’s total economic activity.
Of the veteran associates the retail giant hired in Colorado– 413 have been promoted to jobs with higher pay and greater responsibility at Walmart, according to Hatfield.
“Jobs at Walmart overall are a great fit for veterans,” she said. “Walmart offers jobs at all levels and ongoing advancement opportunities”
The Walmart Foundation also announced a $2.6 million gift to the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program and Swords to Plowshares.
Overall, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have made a $40 million commitment to support organizations and programs that help veterans through education and job training, Hatfield said.
“Hiring a veteran can be one of the best decisions any employer can make,” she said. “Veterans have a strong record of performance under pressure, leadership skills and passion for service, which is right in line with our mission.”
