Zerbe Jewelers, a Tejon Street staple since 1972, is going out of business.

“I’m old and I’m tired,” said Charles Zerbe, who owns the shop with his wife, Janice.

He said plans to close the shop have been in the works for some time. The storefront at 212 N. Tejon St. is the fourth Tejon location for Zerbe Jewelers.

“There’s been no other place for us than downtown Colorado Springs,” Zerbe said, adding, “Business has been OK, but it’s not as easy as or not as fun as it used to be.”

Zerbe said, while the shop is closing, he would continue to provide personal jewelry services from time to time.

Ted Blum, owner of Ted Blum Jewelers Services, also located on Tejon Street, worked with the Zerbes from 1987 until 1995.

“I’m sad to see them leaving,” Blum said. “They were very nice to work with. Charles and Janice are wonderful people and were a big help to me back when I had a young family. They mean a lot to me and I wish nothing but the best for them.”

Charles said the 2,000-plus square feet of space is now available and several possible tenants have shown interest.

  1. Charles. Just thought I would update you on my status. Barbara and I will celebrate our 40th on may 27 and we are still together. We have 3 children, 2 girls and a boy, the boy being the youngest. He is 30, the girls are 32 and 35. Life has been good for us here in Kansas. Barbara retired as a school librarian after 39 years and I am retired from driving a truck over the road for 20 years, and in the oilfield. Still miss those days of trail riding in the mountains and having a good time with my friends in Colorado at that point in time in my life. Wishing you the best, and hope your back doesn’t give you to many problems. Jeff Gilmore
