Former NASA astronaut and commander of the International Space Station, Dr. Leroy Chiao will visit the Space Foundation Discovery Center July 16-18. Chiao, the Space Foundation’s special advisor-human space flight, will sign autographs, posing for photos and inspiring the next generation of astronauts, scientists and engineers, according to a Space Foundation news release.
Chiao was selected by NASA in January 1990 and he became an astronaut in July 1991. He is qualified for flight assignment as a space station commander, space station science officer and as a space shuttle mission specialist. Chiao is a veteran of four space flights and has logged a total of 229 days, 7 hours, 38 minutes and 5 seconds in space, including six space walks.
The public will have opportunities each day to meet Chiao, have their photo taken with him and get his autograph. While at the Discovery Center, guests can also partake in the Summer of Discovery programming with a space-cation, “Exploring our Universe,” with interactive educational fun. Autographs and photos, as well as the Audience with an Astronaut presentations, are included in regular Discovery Center admission cost.
