The 2013 legislative session started today at 10 a.m.
New members of the house were sworn in and the 69th General Assembly elected Rep. Mark Ferrandino, a Denver Democrat representing HD2, as Speaker of the House. He is the second openly gay legislator elected to a leadership role.
Sen. John P. Morse, a Democrat representing a southern swath of El Paso County reaching from Manitou Springs east to Powers Boulevard, was elected president of the Senate.
With a Democratic Governor and Democrats controlling both the Senate and House, this 120-day session is expected to see legislation addressing civil unions for same-sex couples and state college tuition changes for illegal immigrants.
Defense issues and oil and gas drilling regulations are also expected to be at the top of the agenda.
Most of the first day will likely be dedicated to swearing in ceremonies and opening comments.
