The U.S. Air Force Academy’s cyber competition team placed first in 331 undergraduate teams from the United States and Canada in the New York Polytechnic Cyber Security Awareness Week “Capture the Flag” competition held last month.

A total of 1,212 teams – including graduate students and industry professionals – competed from around the world. The AFA team was eighth overall.

The competition is a “challenge-based competition centered around solving technical security challenges to find flags and submit them for points,” said the press release announcing the AFA win. “The competition consists of different kinds of challenges in many different categories from all areas of computer security.”

Four students from each of the top 10 undergraduate teams from the U.S. and Canada are invited to attend a larger competition at the NYU Poly Cyber Security Awareness Week conference in November. It will be the second year that the Academy’s team has participated.
