The Center for Nonprofit Excellence is launching a large-scale economic impact study of nonprofits in the Pikes Peak region.

The center last conducted the study a decade ago, and new information about the sector’s growth and its relation to business development and economic vitality is needed, said Dave Somers, executive director of the center.

“I don’t believe our city can plan effectively for growth and sustainability without this,” Somers said. The study will also have some limited comparisons to other cities.

Summit Economics is conducting the economic impact study and the school of public affairs at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is also a partner.

The study is being conducted in two parts: a profile of the nonprofit sector and an economic impact analysis. Both are being developed by UCCS students. The survey will be distributed to more than 1,000 nonprofits this fall, and results will be released during the first quarter of 2013.
