Downtown Colorado Springs will become “Little London” for an Olympic-style kick-off party July 27.

The Olympic Downtown Celebration, sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority with support from the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Colorado Springs Sports Corp., will be from 4 to 10 p.m.

The event coincides with NBC’s broadcast of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in London, which will be shown on a 15- by 27-foot high-definition video screen at the intersection of Colorado and Tejon, in front of the U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters building.

Organizers say that many of the athletes competing in London have trained in the Springs at some point in their careers. The party includes music, autograph sessions with Olympians and Paralympians, miniature tennis and BMX stunt team performances.

The night will be capped with a Colorado Springs torch lighting that coincides with the lighting of the official Olympic torch in London and fireworks.
