Ever wonder how a ski resort can report a foot of new snow while the weather service reports only a few inches?

Vail Resorts says snow reporting is an inexact science after it was forced to retract its report of a foot of snow on Feb. 23 and change it to 2 inches.

The resort said the reading of the mountain’s snow measuring stake was inaccurate because high winds had blown in too much snow.

Vail Mountain security manager Bob Norris said talk of Vail Mountain intentionally inflating its snow reports is ridiculous.

He says the resort wants to be as accurate as possible. He says resorts are not doing it to increase the number of skiers.
