A Colorado Springs man has been awarded more than $300,000 in a lawsuit claiming he didn’t get jobs in Colorado Springs School District 11 because he’s black.

A federal jury in Denver found in favor of George Christopher Ash, awarding him $303,178 in damages Friday after a weeklong trial.

The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that 45-year-old Ash sued District 11 in 2007, saying he was passed over for jobs despite being more qualified. He had temporary teaching jobs at North Middle School and Doherty High School.

His lawyer says Ash is currently unemployed.

A district spokeswoman has declined to comment on the verdict. District officials have said while Ash was highly qualified, another candidate was more experienced.
