A local general contractor was one of five Colorado companies named as among the nation’s safest contractors of 2008 by the Associated General Contractors of America.

G.H. Phipps Construction Co. and Colorado Springs-based G.E. Johnson Construction were recognized with first and second place “Construction Safety Excellence” awards respectively in the “Building Division,” 700,000 to 1 million hours” category.

Other award-winners were MWH Constructors Inc. of Broomfield which took second place for construction management along with Total Plumbing Inc. of Broomfield and Encore Electric of Englewood – both in the specialty category.

The companies were acknowledged “for the strength of their safety programs and overall safety performance during 2008,” AGC said in a statement.
