As a city, we’ve got rock-hard abs, glutes of steel, not to mention speed, endurance and maximal oxygen uptake. How do we know? Because Men’s Fitness Magazine just named Colorado Springs “the fittest city in America.”

We beat out all of those nacho-munchin’, beer-guzzling, fast-food gobbling couch potatoes in every other city in America, including those not-so-fit-after-all liberals in Boulder and those trendy loft dwellers in Denver.

The magazine cited a number of factors that contribute to our municipal fitness, including passage of the Trails and Open Space tax during 1997, which enabled the city to provide miles of hiking and biking trails – funding what amounts to a gigantic outdoor health club.
