Golfers are scrambling this week to get a membership at the exclusive Garden of the Gods Club before the rates increase by a couple thousand dollars.
For the first time in several years, the Garden of the Gods Club is raising its membership fees, going from a $12,500 initiation membership fee to $15,000. Monthly dues will stay the same at $455 a month. The new fees go into effect May 1.
“Our membership office is flooded with inquires this week,” said Christina White, Garden of the Gods director of communications.
It’s a move that bucks the trend across the country, where private clubs have been decreasing rates in an effort to attract new members.
Garden of the Gods Club has sold 900 new memberships in recent years, bringing its membership to 1,600 members.
“We are growing; we are healthy,” White said. “We don’t need to pursue aggressive growth.”
Sunrise Company bought the property in 2007, which operates a 27-hole course, and made improvements at the club, including a complete renovation of the sports club with state-of-the-art equipment. There have also been guest room improvements. The club features dining, a recreation center, a full-service spa and salon, as well as outdoor and indoor tennis courts and two swimming pools.
There is no cap on the number of members allowed in the club, White said. A cap would only be considered if the club was over crowded or members could not get the time on the golf course that they wanted.
Prospective members can get in at the current initiation fee until April 30.
“In the five years that Sunrise Company has owned the club, this is by far the best deal on membership at GGC,” said Tracey Kalata, director of membership at Garden of the Gods Club. “Now is the best time to join, as initiation fees will soon increase.”
